At a recent press conference with troopers and other local law enforcement, the message was clear. If you drink and drive, you will go to jail. With the approaching Labor Day holiday, there will be more law officers patrolling the roads to make sure that drunk drivers get put behind bars in an effort to make the roads a safer place for motorists. One of the featured speakers was Meridian Police Chief Lee Shelbourne. He is the president of the MS Chiefs of Police Association and a RETIRED MISSISSIPPI TROOPER! His message was clear, “We want to see the number of drunk driving fatalities fall this year.” Shelbourne continued, “I want these local law enforcement officers and the troopers to be safe as they work these roads, and thank each of you for what you do every day.”
Just a quick update to let you know that your letters made a difference. We recently learned that Otis Fairly, one of the convicted murderers of Trooper Billy Langham has been DENIED parole. He is set you be eligible again in three years. Not to worry… we’ll be there! Thanks again everyone for your letters. This killer needs to stay behind bars where he belongs.
Today, Commissioner Steve Simpson read a letter to the MSTA Board outlining the state’s fiscal condition. In that letter he also outlined cuts for troopers that will take effect on July 1, 2009. The following information is taken straight from that letter dated April 15. “… No one disputes that cutting Public Safety should be last, and our pleas to the Legislature are as well received as anyone in state government. Congratulations to the Crawford family on their new arrival! We are pleased to announce that Michael Martin and Janie Lee (Crawford) Martin of Ridgeland announce the birth of their very first child. Hayze Robert Martin was born on May 14, 2008 in McComb at 6:29 p.m. Hayze weighted in at 7 lbs 7 oz and measured 20 inches. Both Hayze and his parents are doing well. He’s welcomed into the Crawford clan by his grandfather, SSG Rod Crawford and uncles M/Sgt Gerry Crawford, Sgt. Steve Crawford, Mike Crawford of the USPS, and Lt.
